Groundhog day – that movie about doing the same thing over and over again, day in and day out. Ever felt that way? It’s boring ay

It’s the definition of insanity – doing the same thing but expecting a different result. You been there too? It sucks man

Eventually, I woke up to myself and changed something, and then the heavens opened up lol For real, I started doing things that made me feel good and next minute [Breaking News] I started to feel good.

You want out of Groundhog Day too? Here’s 4 of my daily habits that’ll help you jump start your fitness routine AND stick with it

1. Prioritise self-care

Put yourself first. Do what you gotta do to get your mind right.

– exercise
– meditate
– journal
– read etc.

Choose a time of day that suits you, and get it done. Even if it means waking up early as. Get it done before ALL them people and responsibilities dominate your schedule.

Choose to put your own health and well-being first, above everything and everyone. Even your children

Oooooooh, that one stings! Holy shoot, putting yourself above your children feels like the wrong thing to do. But it leads to a more positive you. And that leads to a more positive them.

Either way, they feed off your energy – their quality of life is determined by your choices! So start your day right by choosing to prioritise your self-care.

And if you can’t do it for yourself – do it for them.

2. Plan ahead

Here’s my morning workout routine:

– 0430-0500: Handstands + stretch
– 0500-0630: Ura (Cook Islands dance) drills + freestyle dance
– 0630-0700: Stretch

I know what to do and at what time. I don’t need to think about it because it’s already pre-planned. That’s how you get it done.

Plan the night before. Write it down in detail (what you need, where it’ll take place, the time, duration, exercises). The next day – do the plan. That’s it.

The hardest part is writing it down as it requires thought. And the easy part is the execution. Because all you need to do, is the thing.

Plan ahead and earn your self-respect by doing what you’ve committed to.

3. Involve family

Little people are naturally curious. They want to do whatever you’re doing. Like sitting on your back while you’re doing push ups. For you, it’s resistance training; for them, it’s a ride on a Mummy horse.

My nine and seven-year-old love putting me on show because they’re faster runners than I am. And it’s fun seeing them laugh from the heart, even when it’s at my expense.

Playing with the family also forces you to improve because little people don’t care about feelings. They’ll tell you straight up when you suck. And they’ll say it with cute smiles and sing-song voices. That’s all the accountability you need.

4. Exercise anywhere

“Let’s go for a scooter ride Mummy!; tip, you’re it!” – the demands of my playful little boy and girl

There are always opportunities to exercise anywhere anytime. Because sometimes the workout plan doesn’t go to plan.

And if you’re like me, that self-critical inner voice is so damn loud that deviating from the plan meant failure. But I’ve since learned that you gotta go with the flow to be open to doing things in different ways:

– Playing tips in the backyard
– Climbing the monkey bars
– Dancing at the beach

By going with the flow, you see the possibilities of exercising anywhere anytime

Takeaways

Sometimes it can feel daunting to keep fit with the demands of a family. But all is not lost. These are four of my tips to getting starting and sticking with it:

– prioritise self-care
– plan ahead
– involve the family
– exercise anywhere

Do this and you’ll be the person you want to be – an amazing mother, lover, friend, sister, daughter… with a nice peach
